Bhagavad Gita 1.19
स घोषो धार्तराष्ट्राणां हृदयानि व्यदारयत् । नभश्च पृथिवीं चैव तुमुलो व्यनुनादयन् ॥
s ghoṣo dhārtarāṣṭrāṇāṃ hṛdayāni vyadārayat | nabhaś ca pṛthivīṃ caiva tumulo vyanunādayan ||
Translation
That tumultuous sound, reverberating through sky and earth, tore the hearts of the sons of Dhritarashtra.

What news lifted someone today and hollowed someone else?
Read this verse in its chapter: Chapter One
The same sound that signaled victory on one side cracked open the chests of the other. Hṛdayāni vyadārayat. Tore their hearts. Sanjaya, sympathetic narrator to the blind father, lets us know which way the wind has shifted before the first arrow is loosed. A sound is never just a sound; it is a sound landing in a body. The Kaurava listing was a roster against fear. The Pandava reply was the fear's justification.
