Chapter 5Verse 1 of 29

Bhagavad Gita 5.1

संन्यासं कर्मणां कृष्ण पुनर्योगं च शंससि । यच्छ्रेय एतयोरेकं तन्मे ब्रूहि सुनिश्चितम् ॥

sannyāsaṃ karmaṇāṃ kṛṣṇa punar yogaṃ ca śaṃsasi | yac chreya etayor ekaṃ tan me brūhi suniścitam ||

Translation

Renunciation of actions you praise, Krishna, and again you praise yoga. Tell me for certain which of the two is the better.

The student opens with the same kind of question he asked at the start of Chapter Three. You keep praising both, sannyāsaṃ karmaṇāṃ and yogam. Tell me one, suniścitam, with finality. He has not heard yet that Krishna's two endorsements are not two alternatives but two angles on the same thing. The verse is honest: when a teaching shifts between two terms, the student wants the binary clarified. Aurobindo reads this as the moment the teaching has to slow down. The student is not lazy. He is asking the same question the teaching keeps producing, and the answer needs another five verses to take its full form.

Reflection

What teaching of yours have you been demanding a final word on, before you have lived the question long enough?
