Bhagavad Gita 14.18
ऊर्ध्वं गच्छन्ति सत्त्वस्था मध्ये तिष्ठन्ति राजसाः । जघन्यगुणवृत्तिस्था अधो गच्छन्ति तामसाः ॥ १८ ॥
ūrdhvaṁ gacchanti sattva-sthāḥ madhye tiṣṭhanti rājasāḥ | jaghanya-guṇa-vṛtti-sthā adho gacchanti tāmasāḥ ||18||
Translation
Those established in sattva go upward; the rajasic stay in the middle; those established in the function of the lowest guna go downward.

If you stopped working on yourself today, in which direction would your default guna drift you?

A vertical map. Sattvic lives ascend, rajasic lives stay roughly level, tamasic lives descend. The geometry is not moralistic; it is gravitational. Each guna has a natural altitude, and the dominant guna pulls the dehin toward its altitude. The implication, paired with the death-verses above, is that the work of cultivating sattva over a lifetime is the work of giving the next placement a higher floor. Verse 19 will go further and indicate that even the upward floor is still inside the guna system. For now, the map is offered plainly: three altitudes, three directions of drift.
