Chapter 18Verse 43 of 78

Bhagavad Gita 18.43

शौर्यं तेजो धृतिर्दाक्ष्यं युद्धे चाप्यपलायनम् । दानमीश्वरभावश्च क्षात्रं कर्म स्वभावजम् ॥

śauryaṃ tejo dhṛtir dākṣyaṃ yuddhe cāpy apalāyanam / dānam īśvara-bhāvaś ca kṣātraṃ karma svabhāva-jam

Translation

Heroism, splendor, steadiness, skill, not fleeing in battle, generosity, and a ruler's bearing, is the work of the kshatriya, born of his nature.

Kshatriya karma. Seven qualities. Shaurya, courage in danger. Tejas, the radiating presence that commands attention without violence. Dhriti, the steadiness already named, applied here under fire. Dakshya, skill, the trained competence that does not freeze. Yuddhe apalayanam, not turning back from battle once joined. Dana, generosity, the willingness to give from what one holds. Ishvara-bhava, the bearing of one who can carry authority without becoming corrupt with it. This is Arjuna's exact list. The verse is, among other things, a final reminder of who he is. He is being asked to do the work his nature equipped him for, not the work of the renunciate that he is not. The order of qualities is its own argument.

Reflection

Which kshatriya quality is yours by nature, and where do you under-invest in it?
