Chapter 18Verse 63 of 78

Bhagavad Gita 18.63

इति ते ज्ञानमाख्यातं गुह्याद्गुह्यतरं मया । विमृश्यैतदशेषेण यथेच्छसि तथा कुरु ॥

iti te jñānam ākhyātaṃ guhyād guhyataraṃ mayā / vimṛśyaitad aśeṣeṇa yathecchasi tathā kuru

Translation

Thus I have declared to you the knowledge that is more secret than the secret. Reflect on it entirely; do as you wish.

Astonishing line. After eighteen chapters of teaching, after the surrender command of the previous verse, Krishna releases the student to his own freedom. Vimrishya etad asheshena, reflect on all of this. Yatha icchasi tatha kuru, do as you wish. The teacher will not coerce. The respect for Arjuna's agency is total. No salvation by hypnosis. No conversion by pressure. The knowledge has been laid out completely. The decision is the student's. This single verse is what marks the Gita as scripture of freedom rather than scripture of submission. The surrender that is coming, when it comes, will be Arjuna's own. The teacher gives him the dignity of choosing it.

Reflection

Knowing the teacher honors your freedom, what would you choose to do today?
