Bhagavad Gita 3.20
कर्मणैव हि संसिद्धिमास्थिता जनकादयः । लोकसङ्ग्रहमेवापि सम्पश्यन्कर्तुमर्हसि ॥
karmaṇaiva hi saṃsiddhim āsthitā janakādayaḥ | loka-saṅgraham evāpi sampaśyan kartum arhasi ||
Translation
By action alone, indeed, Janaka and others reached perfection. You should also perform action, having regard to the holding together of the world.
Reflection
Whose example have you been waiting for that you already have in front of you?
Read this verse in its chapter: Chapter Three
Janakādayaḥ. Janaka and his like. The teacher reaches for the example any student of the time would recognize: the king-philosopher who attained the highest while running a kingdom. Not a renunciate. A ruler. Loka-saṅgraha, the holding-together of the world, the wider reason to act introduced here. Krishna will lean on it for the next five verses. The verb arhasi, you are fit to, you are owed the chance. The student is not asked to want this. He is told the standing is already his.
