Chapter 4Verse 30 of 42

Bhagavad Gita 4.30

अपरे नियताहाराः प्राणान्प्राणेषु जुह्वति । सर्वेऽप्येते यज्ञविदो यज्ञक्षपितकल्मषाः ॥

apare niyatāhārāḥ prāṇān prāṇeṣu juhvati | sarve 'py ete yajña-vido yajña-kṣapita-kalmaṣāḥ ||

Translation

Others, of regulated food, offer the life-breaths into the life-breaths. All these are knowers of sacrifice, their sins consumed away by sacrifice.

Sarve 'py ete yajña-vidaḥ. All these are knowers of sacrifice. The verse closes the long catalog and names what all the forms share: they know sacrifice, and the offering has cleared what was clogged in them. Yajña-kṣapita-kalmaṣāḥ, their corruption diminished by sacrifice. The verse is the chapter's leveler. The student is being told that the people performing all those various practices are doing the same thing under different equipment. Aurobindo: the form is plural, the substance is one.

Reflection

Whose practice have you been ranking below yours that runs on the same fire?
