Bhagavad Gita 7.5
अपरेयमितस्त्वन्यां प्रकृतिं विद्धि मे पराम् | जीवभूतां महाबाहो ययेदं धार्यते जगत् ||
apareyam itas tv anyāṁ prakṛtiṁ viddhi me parām | jīva-bhūtāṁ mahā-bāho yayedaṁ dhāryate jagat ||
Translation
This is the lower form. But besides this, O large-armed one, know another higher form of my nature, which forms the life by which this universe is upheld.

When you say I, which of the two natures do you point to?

After the lower comes the higher. Same speaker, calmly distinguishing. Above the eightfold equipment there is a second nature, the jiva-bhuta, the life that holds the world together. This is what looks out from behind the eyes. It is not made of the elements. It is the reason the elements arrange themselves into a living body at all. Without it the earth and water and fire would not become a man, only a corpse. Krishna names the two together so Arjuna does not collapse them. The body and mind go one way at death. What was looking through them is from another order entirely.
