Chapter 8Verse 19 of 28

Bhagavad Gita 8.19

भूतग्रामः स एवायं भूत्वा भूत्वा प्रलीयते | रात्र्यागमेऽवशः पार्थ प्रभवत्यहरागमे ||

bhūta-grāmaḥ sa evāyaṁ bhūtvā bhūtvā pralīyate | rātry-āgame'vaśaḥ pārtha prabhavaty ahar-āgame ||

Translation

This very same multitude of beings, coming into existence again and again, dissolves on the arrival of night, helpless, O son of Pṛthā, and is born again on the arrival of day.

The cycle repeats with the same beings, not new ones each time. The same multitude returns at each dawn, helpless to resist, and dissolves at each nightfall. The word helpless is the heart of the verse. The beings do not choose the dissolution and they do not choose the return. They are pulled through the same arc again and again. This is the round Krishna offered to lift the seeker out of, two verses earlier. The size of what is being escaped is now visible. The verse is sober. He shows the round before he names the way out, so the offer of the way out is understood for what it is worth.

Reflection

Where in your life have you been pulled through the same arc again and again?
