Chapter 13Verse 34 of 34

Bhagavad Gita 13.34

क्षेत्रक्षेत्रज्ञयोरेवमन्तरं ज्ञानचक्षुषा। भूतप्रकृतिमोक्षं च ये विदुर्यान्ति ते परम्॥

kṣetra-kṣetrajñayor evam antaraṁ jñāna-cakṣuṣā bhūta-prakṛti-mokṣaṁ ca ye vidur yānti te param

Translation

Those who, by the eye of knowledge, know thus the difference between field and knower of the field, and the liberation of beings from prakriti, they reach the supreme.

Closing verse. Jnana-chakshu, the eye of knowledge. Not the physical eye. Not even ordinary reason. A new organ developed by the dispositions catalogued earlier in the chapter. Through this eye, two things become visible. The difference between field and knower. And the liberation of beings from prakriti, the unbinding of the witness from the qualities of nature. Those who know these two, the verse says, reach the supreme. Yanti te param. The chapter ends not on a private mystical note but on a quiet confidence. Two clean knowings, one supreme attainment. The work of the chapter has been to install that eye. Today, having read this far, ask whether the eye has begun to open.

Reflection

Having read this far, ask whether the eye described has begun to open in you.
