Bhagavad Gita 15.11
यतन्तो योगिनश्चैनं पश्यन्त्यात्मन्यवस्थितम् । यतन्तोऽप्यकृतात्मानो नैनं पश्यन्त्यचेतसः ॥
yatanto yoginaś cainaṁ paśyanty ātmany avasthitam | yatanto 'py akṛtātmāno nainaṁ paśyanty acetasaḥ ||
Translation
Striving yogins see him present in themselves; but those of uncultivated minds, though they strive, see him not, being witless.

Where am I striving on uncultivated ground rather than clearing it?

Effort by itself is not the price tag. Striving without inner preparation is striving among the leaves. Yogis whose ground has been worked see the resident standing inside their own self, atmany avasthitam, not somewhere else. Akritatmanah literally means whose self has not been made yet, meaning the cleaning has not been done. They strive, sometimes harder than yogis, and still do not see, because the surface they are searching from is too cluttered to reflect. Practice implication is humbling and freeing. More effort alone is not the next step. Cleaner ground for the same effort is.
