Bhagavad Gita 2.6
न चैतद्विद्मः कतरन्नो गरीयो यद्वा जयेम यदि वा नो जयेयुः । यानेव हत्वा न जिजीविषामस्तेऽवस्थिताः प्रमुखे धार्तराष्ट्राः ॥
na caitad vidmaḥ kataran no garīyo yad vā jayema yadi vā no jayeyuḥ | yān eva hatvā na jijīviṣāmas te 'vasthitāḥ pramukhe dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ ||
Translation
And we do not know which of the two is better for us, whether that we should vanquish them, or that they should vanquish us. Those whom, having killed, we should not care to live, even they are standing before us, the sons of Dhritarashtra.

When did you stop being able to tell which outcome you wanted?
Read this verse in its chapter: Chapter Two
The first honest admission of the chapter. Na vidmaḥ. We do not know. Not "they should not be killed." I do not know which is better, to win or to lose. The collapse has reached the place where outcomes have stopped sorting. Victory tastes the same as defeat. The men he would have to kill to win are the men he would not want to outlive. The arithmetic has dissolved. This is the place from which a person stops calculating and starts asking. The next verse will name what he has become.
