Bhagavad Gita 3.16
एवं प्रवर्तितं चक्रं नानुवर्तयतीह यः । अघायुरिन्द्रियारामो मोघं पार्थ स जीवति ॥
evaṃ pravartitaṃ cakraṃ nānuvartayatīha yaḥ | aghāyur indriyārāmo moghaṃ pārtha sa jīvati ||
Translation
He who, in this world, does not turn the wheel thus set in motion, lives a life of sin, indulging in the senses; he lives in vain.
Reflection
Where have you been calling withdrawal virtuous when it was the wheel turning without your hand on it?
Read this verse in its chapter: Chapter Three
Moghaṃ jīvati. He lives in vain. The verse closes the wheel argument with the hardest line in the chapter. The man who does not turn it lives uselessly, aghāyu, of sinful life, indriyārāma, taking his pleasure only in the senses. Three adjectives stacked. Krishna does not soften it. Shankara: the verb anuvartayati, to turn in continuation, names the only legitimate posture. You inherited the wheel turning. You either keep it turning or you have stolen the motion. The third option, sitting it out as virtue, the verse refuses to grant.
