Chapter 4Verse 25 of 42

Bhagavad Gita 4.25

दैवमेवापरे यज्ञं योगिनः पर्युपासते । ब्रह्माग्नावपरे यज्ञं यज्ञेनैवोपजुह्वति ॥

daivam evāpare yajñaṃ yoginaḥ paryupāsate | brahmāgnāv apare yajñaṃ yajñenaivopajuhvati ||

Translation

Some yogins perform sacrifice to the gods alone; others offer sacrifice into the fire of Brahman by sacrifice itself.

The verse opens the catalog of sacrifice-forms that the chapter will lay out for the next eight verses. Two types named first: those who keep the older ritual frame, offering to gods, and those who fold the offering into Brahman itself. Yajñena eva upajuhvati, by sacrifice itself, they offer. The grammar is folded in on itself: the sacrifice is offered by means of sacrifice. Aurobindo reads the doubling as the marker of the higher form: the sacrificing has become its own instrument and its own substance.

Reflection

Which of your daily acts have already become offerings without you naming them as such?
