Chapter 4Verse 26 of 42

Bhagavad Gita 4.26

श्रोत्रादीनीन्द्रियाण्यन्ये संयमाग्निषु जुह्वति । शब्दादीन्विषयानन्य इन्द्रियाग्निषु जुह्वति ॥

śrotrādīnīndriyāṇy anye saṃyamāgniṣu juhvati | śabdādīn viṣayān anya indriyāgniṣu juhvati ||

Translation

Others offer the senses, hearing and the rest, into the fires of restraint; others offer sense-objects, sound and the rest, into the fires of the senses.

Two paired forms of inner sacrifice. Anye, others. Some offer their senses into the fires of restraint, keeping the gates closed. Others offer the objects into the fires of the senses, letting the meeting happen without grabbing. The verse pairs the renunciate and the engaged path as two valid sacrifices, not as a hierarchy. Shankara: both are forms of yajna because both involve a controlled exchange instead of unconscious consumption. The image of fire is doing structural work now: every level of practice has its fire.

Reflection

Are you closing the gate or letting the meeting happen unowned, and which one fits today?
