Not by the study of the Vedas and sacrifices, not by gifts, not by ritual acts, not by severe austerities can I be seen in this form in the world of men by any other than you, O foremost of the Kurus. Na veda-yajna-adhyayanair na danair. The whole list of standard religious practices is named only to say that none of them, by themselves, opens this form. The verse is decisive about means. The vision Arjuna had is not unlocked by spiritual technique. It is given by grace to a particular receiver at a particular hour. The teaching that follows in the closing verses will name what does open this form, and the answer will not be a more powerful technique but a different orientation entirely.
